german

German is offered at both Junior and Senior Cycle at John the Baptist Community School. The subject aims to contribute to pupils’ awareness of language as a system of communication and to develop an awareness of another culture, and thus a more objective perspective of their own culture. It also aims to develop in pupils the capacity to engage in fruitful transactions and interactions with others in German and to encourage and equip pupils to consider participating in social and cultural activities involving the use of the language. The communicative skills acquired at Junior Cycle are further developed at Senior Cycle so as to enable pupils to extract information and derive enjoyment from various media in the language. The subject also aims to enable pupils to consider as a realistic option the possibility of pursuing leisure activities and/or career opportunities through the medium of the language.
