John the Baptist C.S. is delighted to encourage next year’s TY student to apply to be part in the Limerick Sports Partnership Voluntary Inspired Participation (VIP) Programme in 2021/22. Many TYs from the school have been lucky to be part of this wonderful programme in the last few years and we hope to continue this moving forward.
Volunteers are the backbone of sport and physical activity in the community and hence the Limerick Sports Partnership feel it is important to support, develop and mentor local teenagers to become sports and physical activity volunteers/ leaders across Limerick. There are great successes to be gained when peers are used as the mentors across all generations. This has been the case with the VIP programme where the selected young people became excellent coaches/leaders/mentors while also gaining personal development skills.
The yearlong V.I.P Transition year programme is not about the sports star but about identifying potential in students that with the right supports and encouragement could become future coaches and leaders in the sport and physical activity sector. These 35 students attend the UL Sports Arena every Monday from 9.30-4.00 where they are given the opportunity to gain nationally recognised sports coaching qualifications and attend important health related workshops such as:
- Active Leadership
- Prime Rugby
- Get Going Get Rowing
- Coaching Children
- Camogie Refereeing Course
- Kick Start 1 FAI
- GAA Foundation Course
- Basketball Course
- Sports Leader UK
- Pickleball Course
- Spike Ball
- Little Athletics
The registration will remain open until Friday 2nd of April at 5:00pm. Any perspective Transition Year students in 2021/22, have a keen interest in sport and who turn 16 years old before the 30th of April 2022 are eligible to apply for the programme.
