Science Week logo 2013The halls of John the Baptist C.S. were alight this week with all things science to celebrate national Science Week. Budding chemists, biologists and physisists were treated to a number of exciting projects and activities.

The Only Way is UpTo launch Science Week 2013, Dr. Norah Patten from UL visited the TY Young Scientist Groups to launch the competition, “The Only Way is Up”. In this competition the winning experiment will be tested on The International Space Station. A science quiz was held for all Second Years, with Mr. Quinn taking charge as Quizmaster. It was quite an exciting event, with a tie breaker needed in the dying moments. Senior students also took part in the ISTA (Irish Science Teachers’ Association) Senior Science Quiz in L.I.T. Science week was also marked by a competition for students to design a science based Superhero or villain. Second Year students showed impressive imagination and Science knowledge to produce an array of fascinating characters, with a multitude of amazing powers. A display of their masterpieces was displayed on the upstairs’ corridor. It was an extremely difficult job to decide a winner but the following budding artists took the top prizes: 3rd Place Caitlin McNamara, 2nd Place Anna O’Connell, with 1st Place going to Jade Mullane for her beautiful depiction of her Superheroine “Recycle Woman”.

The week culminated with the thrilling Science magic show. Mr. Buckley and Ms. Buckley delighted students and staff with an shocking series of feats such as the creation of “elephant toothpaste”, the death of a jelly babe (with breathtaking results), the flash freezing of various items with liquid nitrogen as well as setting many items and people on fire! Every safety precaution was taken and the only person to be hurt was the jelly baby! Well done to all involved with the week.
