Storm Éowyn – Update

A red weather warning for Storm Éowyn has been issued tomorrow Friday for Limerick, from 2:00am to 10am. This warning extends to 12:00pm in neighbouring counties such as Tipperary and Clare. Storm Éowyn is being described as a “stand-out storm” by the National Emergency Co-ordination Group, a rare event which will cause disruption and challenging conditions across the country. The Department of Education has ordered all schools to close for the duration of the warning. While we could consider a delayed start after 10:00am, likely unsafe travelling conditions after the worst of the storm passes and the weather warning in other areas would make it impossible for many of our students and staff to travel to the school safely. After the red warning expires, safety checks may be needed to assess whether any damage has occurred and to ensure the safety of school communities, and parents and the school community would need time to prepare to return to school. Bus Eireann have stated that buses will not be in a position to facilitate a delayed opening scenario for a school even if the red warning has ceased in that area. This is because of the danger of fallen trees and debris still being present in different areas. Furthermore, it is anticipated that there will be considerable disruption to power and utility services in many parts of the country.

John the Baptist Community School will therefore be closed Friday the 24th of January, for the entire day. The health and safety of our school population is paramount.

All students are asked to engage with work assigned in person and online to continue their learning. Planned events will be rescheduled where possible. We are currently working on what will happen with the Leaving Certificate pre-examinations and will update students as soon as possible.

We urge you to please take active actions to protect yourself, your family and property. Stay indoors, shelter in place and be prepared for exceptional measures as power outages are likely.
