Traditional music is very much alive and well in the school with a vibrant “Trad” group. Meeting once a week over two lunch times, the group consists of both Junior and Senior students with an interest in and flair for Traditional Irish music. A vast array of musicians and instruments take part ranging from fiddles to tin whistles, from bodhrans to banjos! The group also explore number of older and more modern pieces, even tackling dance numbers and pop classics. The ensemble often play for school events and greatly enhance such occasions.
The trad group of John The Baptist C.S is an extracurricular option. The trad group is very important in the school and are regularly heard school events and gatherings. The trad group is also an excellent opportunity to make friends with both the musicians in your year and also the musicians in other years. In addition to this the trad group is a great way to represent your school.
Each year the transition year student that were involved in the trad group from first to third year gets the opportunity to host and be the leader and organiser of the whole trad group in their year of TY. This year 2016/2017 two transition year student have taken on the task to teach all the musicians from first to third year tunes and get them ready for performances.

Each year transition year students that have been involved in the trad group from first to third year gets the opportunity to host and become the leaders and organisers of the trad group during their TY year. This year 2016/2017 two transition year students, Luke Lockhert O’Dea and Llyod O’Dea, have taken on the task. Their role is to teach all the musicians from first to third year the relevant tunes and to prepare the group for performances.
The trad group of John The Baptist C.S is an extracurricular option that you have a choice to do if you play traditional music on any trad instrument. The trad group is very important in the school as the group are used for nearly all events and gatherings in the school. The trad group gets 5 – 6 minutes of freedom to play traditional tunes of their choice, while the crowd claps along and enjoys the performance. The trad group is also an excellent opportunity to make friends with both the musicians in your year and also the musicians in years above – Llyod O’Dea
